Article Submission for Peer Review

The specialized journal “Criminal Law and Criminology Studies” (formerly Journal of Law and Political Science) is a scientific‑research publication of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, University of Tehran, published biannually (Spring–Summer and Autumn–Winter).

Articles submitted for publication must not have been previously published in any other journal, nor be simultaneously submitted to other journals.

Manuscripts are accepted only through the online submission system (Online Submission).

Authors must prepare their manuscripts according to the Journal’s Article Preparation Guidelines available on the journal website and upload them together with the completed commitment form. Manuscripts that do not comply with the required format will not undergo initial review.

Important Instructions for Article Submission

  1. User Registration

Click the “Author Registration” option on the right side of the page.

For university faculty members (Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor), the academic rank must be specified when completing the profile (stating only “faculty member” is insufficient).

After completing the required information and receiving your username and password, you may proceed with article submission.

University faculty members, after logging into the system and completing their personal information in the Settings section, should indicate whether they are willing to serve as reviewers. If they are not interested in reviewing, they must select the relevant option; otherwise, they should select “I am willing to review.”

  1. Username and Password

A username and password are required to submit an article. Please keep the system email containing this information secure. The username is the author’s email address.

If you forget your password:

  • Click “Submit Article / Member Login.”
  • Select “I cannot log in.”
  • Enter your email address and select “Change Password.”

An activation email will be sent by the system. After clicking the activation link, a new password will be sent to your email. After logging in, users can change their password in the Settings section of their dashboard.

  1. Uploading the Manuscript

To submit a manuscript, click “Submit Article / Member Login.” After logging into the system, upload the following three files:

  • Main Article Text (Word file)
  • Author Information
  • Completed Commitment Form (as supplementary text)

Do not upload figures, tables, letters to the editor, or PDF files as separate files. All files must be uploaded only in Word format.

The main file name must be the English title of the article, and the author’s name or journal name must not appear in the file name or within the manuscript text.

If the upload process is completed correctly, the manuscript will appear in the “Articles Under Review” section on the right side of the user page. Otherwise, it will appear in “Incomplete Articles,” meaning it has not been submitted for review.

When selecting the journal during submission, ensure that the correct journal title is chosen and that the manuscript is not mistakenly submitted to another journal.

Before uploading the files, please note:

  • Upload exactly one file as the main article text.
  • The manuscript must be uploaded without the authors’ names and affiliations.
  • Files labeled “Supplementary Text” will not be visible to reviewers.

Important note: Users must log into the system with the “Author” role.

The English abstract must be between 700 and 1200 words and written in high‑quality, publishable English. Translations produced using Google Translate or similar tools are not accepted.

The English abstract must include the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Research Objective
  • Research Method
  • Research Findings
  • Conclusion

Initial Editorial Screening

After submission, the manuscript will first be sent to the journal expert for initial screening.

Ensuring that the manuscript follows the journal format and carefully reviewing the Author Guidelines to correct potential errors is the responsibility of the corresponding author. Due to the high number of submissions, it is not possible for the editorial office to provide detailed corrections for every manuscript.

As a result, manuscripts that do not follow the required format may remain in the initial review stage for a long time.

Authors are therefore strongly advised to carefully study the Article Preparation Guide available on the journal website before submitting their manuscript.

Downloading and reviewing one of the published articles on the journal’s website can serve as a useful template. However, when submitting a manuscript for review, author names and identifying information must be removed.

Important Note

Each manuscript is submitted only once and receives a unique tracking code. After receiving reviewers’ comments, authors must not submit the revised manuscript as a new submission with a new tracking code. All revisions must be submitted under the original tracking code, since the review history is linked to that code.

Authors are also requested not to send manuscript files by email to the editorial expert or the editor‑in‑chief.

Tracking the Manuscript

To track the status of your manuscript, click “History” in the Operations section of the Articles Box. This section displays all stages of the review process.

After initial screening and approval by the journal expert, the manuscript will be forwarded to the Editor‑in‑Chief.

All stages of the process can be viewed through the “History” option in the operations section.

If the author is uncertain whether the article topic fits the scope of the journal, they should email the article title to the journal expert before submission. After receiving approval from the Editor‑in‑Chief, the manuscript may then be submitted.

Style Guide of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology Studies

  1. Article Writing Guidelines
  • The article length (including title, abstracts, main text, conclusion, and references) must be between 5,000 and 8,000 words, approximately 20 pages in A4 format.

  • The Persian abstract should appear at the beginning of the article and the English abstract at the end, both explaining the research problem and presenting the main findings.
  • For international indexing, a detailed English extended abstract (500–1000 words) must be submitted after acceptance and before publication.
  • The article must include 4–7 keywords, either simple or compound, arranged alphabetically.
  • Non‑Persian terms and expressions should be written in footnotes.
  • Footnotes must be automatically numbered using CTRL + ALT + F and must never be numbered manually.
  • Punctuation marks must appear before the footnote number.
  • All headings, except Introduction and Conclusion, must be numbered sequentially, and titles such as Chapter, Section, or Subsection should not be used.

Unlike theses or dissertations, separate headings such as Research Problem or Literature Review should not be used.
  • The research method and approach must be clearly stated. If the study is empirical or field‑based, the research type, data collection methods, research population, sample size, and sampling method must be explained in the abstract and introduction.
  • No section title should be devoted solely to “Concepts and Generalities.”
  • None of the section titles should be identical to the title of the article.
  • Each section must contain adequate explanation, at least several lines of discussion.

  1. Citation Guidelines

The citation method in this journal is in‑text citation, written as follows:

(Author’s Last Name, Year: Page Number)

Example: (Ashouri, 1395: 86)

English in‑text references follow the same format:

(Garland, 2001: 96)

  • If the same source is cited immediately again, the Persian term «همان» and the Latin abbreviation “Ibid.” are used. If the page number differs, it should be mentioned after «همان» or Ibid.
  • If a source is cited again but not consecutively, the Persian term «پیشین» or the Latin abbreviation “Op. Cit.” should be used. If the page number differs, it should follow «پیشین» or Op. Cit.
  • When citing a source quoted through another work, both references should be mentioned: first the original source, then the source consulted by the author.
  • If an author has multiple works in the same year, distinguish them with letters (الف، ب، ج …). Example: (Katouzian, 1380a: 50).
  • If multiple sources are cited within one parenthesis, they must be separated with a semicolon (؛).
  • In‑text citations must begin with one space after the previous word or sentence, and the punctuation mark of the sentence must come after the closing parenthesis.

Examples of references:

  • Edited collections:

Last name, First name (Year). “Article Title”; Title of Edited Volume, Vol. (number), Edition (number), Place of publication: Publisher.

  • Court decisions:

Decision No. (decision number), dated (date of issuance), issued by (issuing authority).

  1. Guidelines for Preparing the Reference List

The reference list should appear at the end of the article under the title “References” and must be divided into Persian and non‑Persian sources (Arabic first, then English, French, etc.). Sources are not separated by type (book, article, etc.) and must be arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.

Examples:

  • Book:

Last name, First name (Year). Book Title, Translator/Editor (if any), Vol. (number), Edition (number), Place of publication: Publisher.

  • Journal article:

Last name, First name (Year). “Article Title”, Journal Name, No. (issue number), Season, pp. (first–last page).

  • Conference or edited collection:

Last name, First name (Year). “Article Title”; Title of Proceedings/Collection, Vol. (number), Edition (number), Place of publication: Publisher.

  • Court decision:

Decision No. (decision number), dated (date), issued by (issuing authority).

  • Thesis or dissertation:

Last name, First name (Year of defense). Thesis Title, Thesis submitted for the degree of (Master’s/PhD), Faculty and University name.

  • Research project:

  • Website:

If there are multiple authors, list all names with last name first, separated by semicolons. Example:

Alijani, Mehdi; Kaviani, Mohammad; Ramezani, Ali.

  • For two authors, both last names appear in the in‑text citation:(Alijani and Kaviani, 1397: 2)
  • For more than two authors, only the first author is mentioned followed by “and others” in in‑text citation:(Alijani et al., 1397: 2)

However, all authors must be listed in full in the reference list.

Laws and regulations must be cited with the complete title of the law and the year of enactment. If the law belongs to a foreign country, the country name must appear in English in parentheses at the end.

  1. Author Information Guidelines

Below each author’s name, their academic position (scientific rank) should be stated rather than their job title.

Example:

Assistant Professor, Faculty of …, University of …

Along with the main manuscript file, a separate file titled “Author Information” must be uploaded containing:

  • First name and last name
  • Academic degree
  • Academic position (scientific rank, not job title)
  • Address
  • Contact number
  • Email address

Titles such as Engineer, Dr., etc. should not be written before the authors’ names.

Author information should appear at the top of the English abstract in the following format:

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law & Political Science, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

If there are multiple authors, one of them must be designated as the corresponding author, responsible for communication with the journal. The corresponding author must regularly check their account in the journal submission system and maintain contact with the editorial office. Authors should agree on this matter before submitting the manuscript.

Nevertheless, all authors share full academic and legal responsibility for the content of the article.

The submitted manuscript must not include the authors’ identifying information. Author details will only be added during the final revision stage.

The following table should be used to present the authors’ information

6. Evaluation and Publication Policy

Each submitted manuscript will be evaluated by at least two peer reviewers. Publication of the article is subject to the approval of both reviewers and the final decision of the Editorial Board and the Editor‑in‑Chief, in accordance with the journal’s internal regulations.

The journal reserves the right to edit accepted manuscripts.

Authors must submit a written commitment letter addressed to the Editor‑in‑Chief, confirming that:

  1. The manuscript has not previously been published, in whole or in part, in any journal, book, or collection (in print or online), under the same or a different title, nor has it been simultaneously submitted elsewhere. The manuscript will not be submitted to another publication until the final decision of this journal is announced.
  2. The manuscript has been reviewed and approved by all authors, and their consent has been obtained for publication in its present form.
  3. The manuscript is an original work, resulting from the personal research of the author(s), and has not been copied, summarized, or translated from any domestic or foreign source, nor does it infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others.

If, at any stage of review, evaluation, acceptance, or even after publication, any violation of copyright or academic misconduct is identified, the matter will be publicly announced on the journal’s website and reported to the disciplinary committee of the author’s affiliated university or other competent legal authorities.

The journal uses plagiarism detection software and reputable academic databases to verify the originality of submissions.

The journal does not accept translated articles.

Positive reviewers’ reports do not guarantee final acceptance. Final acceptance is subject to the approval of the Editorial Board and the Editor‑in‑Chief.

The journal will not process a manuscript if another article by the same author(s) is currently under review or has already been accepted, until the pending manuscript is rejected or the accepted article is published. In such cases, according to journal policy, the manuscript may be removed from the system or placed on a waiting list.

A fee of 2,000,000 IRR must be paid upon submission, and 4,000,000 IRR upon final acceptance. A copy of the payment receipt must be uploaded to the submission system. These fees are non‑refundable once the review process has begun.

In accordance with its policies, the journal may claim all or part of the material rights of the article at any time. Authors must formally agree in writing to this transfer of rights.

Failure to comply with the above requirements will result in the manuscript not being sent for peer review.
